Pan is a fictional character from the manga and anime series Dragon Ball Z, as well as Dragon Ball GT. She is a quarter-breed Human-Saiyajin. In the original Japanese version, she was played by Yuko Minaguchi, while she is played by Elise Baughman in the FUNimation dubbing and by Caitlynne Medrek in the Blue Water Studios dubbing.
Name and origin
It's worth noting that Pan's name derives from the Pan of Roman mythology (and others). This means that, at first glance, she appears to have been named after her mother Videl rather than her father Gohan. However, a closer look reveals that author Akira Toriyama has done it twice, since Pan is also the Japanese and Spanish word for bread, thus continuing his father's food-based name as well as his mother's religion-based name for her god.
Family and heritage
Pan is introduced in the series after the ten-year interval between Majin Buu's defeat and the end of the written Dragon Ball series. In the series, Pan is the daughter of main character Son Gohan and, consequently, the granddaughter of main character Son Goku. Pan is the only original character in the series with the most diluted Saiyajin heritage, and therefore it was stated in the Daizenshuu that she did not have the ability to become a Super Saiyajin. However, this was later contradicted by the Dragon Ball GT Perfect file books, which stated that she could have risen if she had trained hard enough. Toriyama also stated that the simple reason for Pan's inability to become a Super Saiyajin was that he couldn't come up with a logical design for a female Super Saiyajin, given that most Super Saiyajin traits are typical of men, not women.
Appearances
Pan only appears in three chapters of the manga, but her later life is developed in the Dragon Ball GT anime series, where we see her as a young girl traveling the galaxy with her grandfather Goku and Trunks, the half-Saiyajin son of characters Vegeta and Bulma. In the latest episode of Dragon Ball GT, Pan appears as an old woman over 100 years old. She is the grandmother of the character named Son Goku Jr, who has the ability to become a Super Saiyajin. This contradicts the Daizenshuu, which stated that characters with less than half Saiyajin heritage did not have the ability to become Super Saiyajins due to bloodline dilution.
